Varicose veins and spider veins are common vein disorders.
Spider veins are networks of small, unsightly veins that lie just under the surface of the skin and appear blue, purple, or red in color. They are found most often on the legs. In most cases, spider veins are only a cosmetic problem, but can be painful for some people. Spider veins affect around half of all adult women.
Varicose veins are bigger than spider veins, and tend to bulge or twist. In more developed cases, varicose veins can become gnarled, or cord-like. They can occur anywhere on the body, but usually appear on the legs. Varicose veins may be painful, or cause leg swelling or aching.
Some of the main causes of varicose and spider veins include age and pregnancy. As you get older, the elasticity of veins can lose some of its strength, allowing blood to pool in the veins, which may then become swollen and visible. Hormonal changes during pregnancy also increase the risk of developing varicose and spider veins. These usually improve after pregnancy without the need for treatment. A family history of varicose veins can also increase your risk, as can being overweight or obese, and standing or sitting for extended periods of time.
Fortunately, if you have varicose or spider veins, treatment is available and can usually be provided on an outpatient basis. At New York Cardiovascular Associates, vascular experts and vein surgeons use advanced, minimally invasive treatments to eliminate varicose and spider veins, and restore healthy legs without the need for a hospital stay.
