What are veins?
Vein disease refers to a variety of vein disorders, including varicose veins, spider veins, venous reflux, and venous insufficiency. Vein disease affects approximately 25 – 30 million people in the U.S. alone.
Vein disorders are important to have properly diagnosed and treated, as healthy veins are essential for healthy living. Veins form a critical transportation network throughout the body. While arteries carry nutrient-rich blood and oxygen to every part of the body, veins return blood back to the heart.
In normal, healthy veins, strong elastic walls and one-way valves keep blood moving in the right direction. However, in diseased veins, the valves may stop working properly, allowing blood to flow in the wrong direction and form pools in the veins. The vein walls may also lose their elasticity, further contributing to vein bulging, swelling, twisting, and knotting. These abnormal veins, with their slowed blood flow, lead to the disorders called vein disease.
Vein disease may affect anyone, but there are certain factors that can increase your risk of developing a vein disorder. These include family history, obesity, lifestyle habits like prolonged standing or sitting, illness, and age.
Fortunately, there are many effective treatments for vein disease, including for the more common conditions varicose veins and spider veins. Treatment may involve making key lifestyle changes, like losing weight and getting more exercise. If conservative treatment isn’t enough to relive your symptoms, your vein doctor may recommend additional therapies, such as noninvasive approaches to eliminate problem veins and improve your overall vascular health.
