NYCVA Sleep Center
If you have a mild case of sleep apnea, your New York Sleep-Wake Center sleep doctor may recommend lifestyle changes, like losing weight or quitting smoking. If lifestyle changes don’t work, or if you have moderate to severe sleep apnea, additional therapies may be needed.
Some therapies for obstructive sleep apnea include:
• Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP): CPAP therapy uses a special device that helps to open the airways and improve nighttime breathing. The CPAP machine delivers higher-pressure air through a mask worn over your nose while you sleep. The air pressure helps to keep your airways open, preventing apnea and snoring.
• Mouthpiece: Your doctor may also recommend that you try wearing a mouthpiece, or dental device, during sleep to help keep your throat open.
• Surgery: If other treatments fail, surgery may be an option. Surgery can widen the airways, or permanently reposition the jaw in order to keep the throat open during sleep.
Your sleep apnea expert will carefully assess your individual health and the severity of your sleep apnea, and provide personalized advice on the best treatment option for you.
