What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which your breathing periodically stops and starts during sleep. Sleep apnea can be a serious sleep disorder and can lead to heart problems and other complications if left untreated. It is thought that up to 90% of Americans with sleep apnea remain undiagnosed.

The main signs of sleep apnea are loud snoring, and waking up feeling tired after a full night’s sleep. Additional symptoms include:

• Extreme daytime sleepiness
• Waking suddenly in the night with shortness of breath
• Waking with a dry mouth or sore throat
• Waking with a headache
• Difficulty focusing during the day
• Difficulty staying asleep
