About the procedure

Signs of heart problems? Heart valve surgery is performed to treat heart valve disease. With heart valve disease, one or more of the heart’s four valves don’t function properly. You may be born with heart valve disease, or you may have acquired it following infection or age-related changes.

Why it’s done

If medication is not enough to manage your heart valve disease, your cardiologist may recommend heart valve surgery. Heart valve surgery is used to repair or replace heart valves, in order to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.

What to expect

Preparation: Your cardiologist will tell you how to prepare for heart valve surgery.

During: Heart valve surgery is open heart surgery. You will be given a general anesthetic.

After: After surgery you will stay in the hospital for monitoring. When you are released to go home you will have reduced activity for a period of weeks as you recover. Following recovery, you should experience a lessening or disappearance of your symptoms and a higher quality of life.
