Cardiology

Arrhythmia
Pacemaker and DefibrillatorsIf you are unable to maintain a normal heartbeat, your cardiologist at New York Cardiovascular Associates may recommend you wear a pacemaker. A pacemaker is a small device, about the size of silver dollar, that is placed under the skin near your heart to help control your heartbeat. Your cardiac surgeon will implant your pacemaker during a minor surgical procedure.

A defibrillator is another device that can help regulate your heartbeat. Like a pacemaker, it is also implanted near the heart.

If you have an arrhythmia, or cannot regulate your own heart beat, your doctor may talk to you about using a pacemaker or defibrillator.
